The idea of the archive is recurrent in philosophical and artistic thought. In addition to the principles of preservation and conservation, the archive relies on a constellation of ideas of identity, traceability, temporality, space, memory, existence, materiality and historicity. All these questions inspire artists working in different media to manipulate, mix, index, saved from oblivion, and take over archives—audio, visual, filmed, written—or even invent them. The photographs of Stephan Crasneanscki show us the very real and somewhat forgotten audiovisual archive of Jean-Luc Godard, rediscovered by accident somewhere in France.
