The exhibition Paris Champ & Hors-Champ runs through January 4th, 2015, at the Galerie de la Bibliothèque de la Ville de Paris. A host of artists and videographers offer a glimpse into how the capital has changed over the past thirty years.
Reflecting both the changes in photography and the city itself, the exhibition layout is loosely based on Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities and explores a few major themes: the territory (Parisian and metropolitan), space (public and private) and social life (integrated and marginalized). The pieces on display comes from public Parisian museums, libraries and institutions like the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Fonds Municipal d’Art Contemporain, CENTQUATRE and the Institut des Cultures d’Islam. Chris Marker, Stéphane Couturier, Valérie Jouve, Alain Bublex, Mohamed Bourouissa, Jane Evelyn Atwood, Philippe Ramette and Patrick Faigenbaum are just some of the featured artists. While the photographs are well chosen and interesting, the layout of the exhibition is incomprehensible. Better to just pick up the catalogue available from Paris Bibliothèques.
