Annually I invite my friends to my studio for a photo shoot, each year with a different concept in mind. I photograph between 70-150 people in a span of 5 hours. The person I photograph is in front of the camera for 5-6 shots lasting maybe 20-30 seconds. I let things happen very organically within the concept I created. Concept and styling is hinted to the invitees together with some reference photos. I hereby make people use their own interpretation of what I am doing and trying to accomplish. Bare in mind that I basically only put up the frame work for people to come into and explore. I have an idea but am very open to that people might have a different view of what I initially had which is what I want. Sometimes it is very frustrating for me because I want to control the situation more but always stop myself from doing that.
‘Away’
The idea to Away came from a painting my father made, as a young man, of a woman looking away. The painting stuck in my mind throughout my life and finally I had a vehicle to explore it. I found the woman very beautiful with her neck and the hair up in a bun with a few strings loose. She remains a mystery to me, who was she. I could have asked but never did.
