With the founding idea of favouring creative residencies and public commissions, Planches Contact’s theme is the exploration and reproduction of everything that constitutes the identity factors of a town and the surrounding area. Year after year, photographers look at Deauville and its region and exhibit their unique vision. This year’s photographers are Antoine d’Agata, Anne-Lise Broyer, Baudouin Mouanda, Joan Fontcuberta, Pilar Rosado, SMITH, Riverboom, Joel Meyerowitz and The Anonymous Project.
« Since its creation in 2010, the Deauville photography festival, Planches Contact, has become an important event for photography and the cultural life of Deauville.
Based on the principle of public commissions in the area, the festival invites famous and emerging photographers from all over the world to take up residencies throughout the year. Their work is then presented in an open-air series of large-format exhibitions in various locations in the town, and since this year in a major exhibition at the Franciscaines.
The Planches Contact festival encourages and facilitates the creation of new works and, in so doing, participates in the subjective documentation of the evolution of the territory by artists. At the same time, it contributes to the constitution of an important collection of contemporary photographs for the town of Deauville, which are now preserved and exhibited at the Franciscaines.
This new edition, conceived once again in the very particular climate of the pandemic and once again under the direction of Laura Serani, will take place under the sign of the journey and will for the first time give an important place to the moving image with projections and the co-production of films. This year the scenography of the exhibitions is signed by Bruno Moinard, an important figure in interior architecture and scenography.
« Fictive, sentimental, literary, impossible or real, these photographic journeys will trace an imaginary cartography of Normandy. They will lead us elsewhere through the eyes of the twenty-one photographers invited this year.” Laura Serani, artistic director of the festival.
The Programme
The Planches Contact Beach Exhibition takes us to the American coast by dedicating its major beach exhibition to Joel Meyerowitz and his iconic images of Cape Cod.
Antoine d’Agata, also invited in residence, between two trips to Mexico, came several times last winter to discover Normandy under curfew and thus traced his cartography of the region based on significant historical facts and on his experience of the territory.
Anne-Lise Broyer takes us to the Normandy of writers. She speaks here of « Normandy as a place of writing, of drawing a line that links books together, moments of life that have little in common except a territory and the fact that they constitute for [her] a real awakening to the world, both literary and political. This collection of images, crossed by current events, questions the return of this memory to the present, the history that is being replayed, while showing the place where, for these authors, writing was born.
To mark the opening of Les Franciscaines, the festival has invited Joan Fontcuberta and Pilar Rosado to discover the city’s collections. When the camera and the eye begin to be replaced be replaced by algorithms and artificial intelligence in the whole of visual culture, it is necessary to rethink the role of images and artistic heritage that have so far contributed to shaping our sensibility.
SMITH is continuing his Désidération project in Deauville, the first forms of which were deployed at the Rencontres d’Arles, the MacVal, the Filles du Calvaire gallery and the Fresnoy since 2019. Polycephalous, this project is built in collaboration with the studio Diplomates, the writer Lucien Raphmaj and the performer Nadège Piton.
With Congolaise Dream in Normandy, Baudouin Mouanda revisits the different representations of marriage throughout society in intriguing images lulled with melancholy or humour.
The Anonymous Project, a collection created by Lee Schulman, where each image chosen to join the collection is chosen because it has a story to tell. The images selected especially for Storyville in Deauville reflect shared moments in life, emotions we can all relate to. Joyful, amusing or playful, each of these snapshots captures the hopes and dreams of each individual. They are a celebration of life, of our lives, and of a collective memory that belongs to all of us.
Riverboom by Paolo Woods, Gabriele Galimberti, Edoardo Delille, Claude Baechtold is a poetic work that mixes performance, calligraphy and the endless search for time, created in the most symbolic place of the world.
