MEXICO Oaxaca Juchitan - Juchitan, which means "city of flowers" in Zapotec, with its 100,000 inhabitants in the state of Oaxaca, is also the birthplace of Frida Kahlo's mother. Here women enjoy rare power and independence in a patriarchal society like that of Mexico. Juchitan qui signifie « ville aux fleurs » en zapotèque, avec ses 100 000 habitants dans l’état de Oaxaca, est aussi le lieux d’origine de la mère de Frida Kahlo. Ici, les femmes jouissent d’un pouvoir et d’une indépendance rare dans une société patriarcale comme celle du Mexique. USA Navajo Nation Arizona - These women work in the local coal quarry. They earn a decent living and are totally independent. On the reserve, women are generally more active than men, and it is not uncommon for them to return to school late even after having children.

Ces femmes travaillent dans la carrière de charbon du coin. Elles gagnent décemment leur vie et sont totalement indépendantes. Dans la réserve, les femmes sont généralement plus actives que les hommes, et il n'est pas rares qu'elles reprennent leurs études tardivement même après avoir eu des enfants. USA Navajo Nation Arizona - The young women are getting ready for the Miss Navajo contest. They will be questioned by a jury about their knowledge of the Navajo people. Despite the name "miss", this contest rewards less the physical appearance than the anchoring in the Navajo culture and language.

Les jeunes femmes se préparent pour le concours de Miss. Navajo. Elles passeront devant un jury qui les questionneront sur leurs connaissances du peuple navajo. Malgré son appelation "miss", ce concours récompense moins l’apparence physique que l’ancrage dans la culture et la langue navajo. ESTONIA Kihnu - While men were going off to the sea, the women took over men's jobs, such as working in the fields. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the women assumed control of the community’s affairs and therefore became guardians of the island.

Alors que les hommes partaient en mer, les femmes exerçaient des tâches habituellement masculines comme le travail aux champs. Depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle, les femmes de Kihnu régissent ainsi les affaires de la communauté et sont de ce fait, gardiennes de l’île. ALGERIA Tassili Sahara - The Targuia -Tuareg woman- is free. She manages her nomadic tent masterfully. In the event of a break-up or death, she leaves with her children, all her dowry, the tent that has been built and even the camels or animals left to her by her father.

La Targuia -femme touarègue- est libre. Elle dirige de main de maître sa tente nomade. En cas de rupture ou de décès, elle repart avec ses enfants, toute sa dot, la tente qu'on a construite et même les chamelles ou les animaux que lui a laissé son père. CHINA Yunnan - The "dabu", the head of the Moso family: this key role is held by the oldest woman of her lineage. She is the one who transmits the name and the property, holds the reins of the household, owns the land, regulates the division of tasks, manages the savings, organizes the religious ceremonies and watches over the guests. A striking contrast with Confucian China, where men are the authority. La « dabu », la chef de la famille moso : ce rôle clé est tenu par la femme la plus âgée de sa lignée. C’est elle qui transmet le nom et les biens, tient les rênes de la maisonnée, possède la terre, régit la répartition des tâches, gère les économies, organise les cérémonies religieuses et veille sur les hôtes. COMOROS Grand Comore - In Grand Comore, the house and the land are transmitted by all ascendant (male or female) which only the daughter can inherit, mania houli.

INDIA Meghalaya - Sole heirs of the family patrimony, women hold wealth, transmit their names to children and make the decisions of the couple. If women enjoy all these benefits, they are also the ones who work the hardest. Uniques héritières du patrimoine familial, les femmes détiennent les richesses, transmettent leur nom aux enfants et prennent les décisions du couple. KENYA Mount Kenya - Naliapou, the dean of the village. All women of Tumai put an end to their personal stories. The rule was adopted unanimously: each candidate for integration in the village should have divorced. Naliapou, la doyenne du village. KENYA Mount Kenya - Near Mount Kenya, 300 km north of Nairobi, Turkana and Samburu women gathered to found Tumai, a village prohibited to men, with the exception of male children until they reached adulthood around the age of 16.
