Editions lamaindonne presents the work of Ljubiša Danilovic in this book entitledLe Desert Russe (The Russian Desert). As the author explains, “By 2050, Russia will have lost a third of its current population. The largest country in the world will then have just a hundred million citizens.
The Russian desert is a photographic work of fiction, a personal work with snowy Russia as its backdrop, suggesting the inevitable demographic disaster.
I take both a poetic and documentary approach. My work combines personal impressions and visions of unknown parts of the world. Through my photographs, I set out to explore a dreamlike world, suggested by the demographic desert, the loneliness of its inhabitants and the harsh climate. A region on the far side of the world, with empty landscapes inhabited by strange creatures and people who seem to appear as ghosts.
I have crossed Russia on three occasions, on the legendary Trans-Siberian railway from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok. However, this book is not about trains or Russia. It is about a journey. A fifteen-year long inner journey which I can now say is coming to an end.”
