Entre 1993 et 1999, j’ai fréquemment effectué des reportages en Arménie et au Karabagh, explorant l’héritage de l’ère soviétique, l’indépendance naissante, la guerre, le blocus et les élections. Il y a eu d’immenses difficultés, mais il y avait de la solidarité et de l’espoir. En 2022, je suis revenu dans une nation vaincue après une guerre désastreuse en 2020. L’Arménie est aux prises avec une crise politique et existentielle, aggravée par la chute du Karabagh et l’exode de sa population en 2023 après plusieurs siècles de peuplement. J’avais envie de constater par moi-même l’impact de cette période difficile sur la société et d’évoquer le climat de l’époque, un peu comme je l’avais fait dans le passé. J’ai décidé de continuer à utiliser l’argentique noir et blanc et de mélanger les photographies des années 1990 avec celles que je réalise actuellement, afin de mieux réfléchir au long chemin de l’Arménie vers une indépendance sûre, si cela est possible.
