Le 25 octobre, la salle de vente Freeman’s | Hindman de Cincinnati présente ce qui est considéré comme la première photographie américaine d’un couple interracial posé de manière romantique. La maison de vente décrit :
Le daguerreotype anonyme sur plaque, vers 1850-1855, représentant une femme blanche et un homme afro-américain ou métis dans une pose amoureuse, son bras enroulé autour de son épaule, la tirant plus près pendant qu’ils se tiennent la main.
Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, nous n’avons pas pu localiser un autre daguerréotype représentant un homme noir et une femme blanche dans une exposition ouvertement romantique. Le portrait était-il une déclaration politique, un gage d’amour, ou les deux ? Et pourquoi cette petite taille de plaque alors que le standard de l’époque était la sixième plaque, soit une image deux fois plus grande ? Qui a pris l’image ?
