En 1979, Richard Avedon a entamé un projet qu’il a intitulé In The American West; mais déjà auparavant, il avait prévu de photographier un homme couvert d’abeilles. En 1981, il a recruté par voie d’annonces Ronald Fischer, un banquier de Chicago et apiculteur amateur. Pour attirer les insectes, on a enduit sa peau avec du phéromone extrait d’une reine des abeilles, et Fischer, un grand homme au crâne rasé, a patiemment attendu en plein air à Davis, en Californie, pendant qu’Avedon exposait cent vingt-et un négatifs de 8 par 10 pouces* (Avedon tient ici son négatif préféré)…et ils ont tous deux été piqués.
