Thomas Bilanges –Vis-à-vie

The work of the photographer Thomas Bilanges is currently on display at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. Produced in 2006, his series Vis-à-Vie invites the viewer to take a fresh look at the museum.
A museum guard welcomes me with a smile. “Ah, so you’re going to see me then?” Just imagine for a moment. You’re in a museum and you’re asked to select your favorite portrait. Painting, sculpture, photograph—the choice is yours. This is the experiment that Thomas Bilanges tried with the staff of the Musée Carnavalet. The photographer first took the portraits of every single person employed by the museum. Curators, art restorers, security guards, gardeners, even the intern: no less than 180 people sat for Bilanges.
