Preview

The Nadar Gens d’images prize is awarded to The Train. June 8, 1968. The last trip of Robert F. Kennedy, of Paul Fusco, Rein Jelle Terpstra and Philippe Parreno, published by Editions Textuel, introduced by a text of Clément Chéroux, Chief Curator of the Museum of Modern Art of San Francisco.

This book was published in conjunction with The Train. June 8, 1968. The last trip of Robert F. Kennedy, first presented to the SF MoMA from March to June 2018 then to the Rencontres d’Arles from June to September 2018. By intermingling artistic and vernacular, historical and contemporary looks, The Train offers three unique perspectives on this key moment in US history.

On June 8, 1968, three days after the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, a funeral convoy transports his remains from New York to Washington, DC.Paul Fusco is on the train and makes nearly a thousand slides of the bereaved people massed around the tracks. Some of these images have become icons.

In 2014, Rein Jelle Terpstra searched for and collected hundreds of photographs taken by those on the convoy’s journey. In 2009, Philippe Parreno filmed a reenactment of the course of the train showing, in his own words, “the point of view of the dead”. Mixing artistic and vernacular, historical and contemporary looks, The Train offers three unique perspectives on this key moment in US history.
