New Issue of Fisheye #16

Preview

It hit the newsstands last Thursday, January 7th, it’s the latest Fisheye magazine. For the new year the bi-monthly is putting the automated image at the heart of this sixteenth edition and explores the artistic creation around images made, in spite of us, by security cameras, satellites or even drones… The Eye of Photography is giving away 10 copies free of charge*!

Automated Images: the artists are taking possession of the machines

Photo-me booths, security cameras, satellites, drones… The images made without any human intent grow and proliferate around us. If at first the images can let us believe in the disappearance of the authors, those who turn the paradox upside down use them to regain their authority. Technical developments always reveal the concerns of a society and its technological unawareness, and these new photographs tell us something about the age in which we live.

What do these authorless images bring? What do they tell us? How are they used? How do the artists retake possession of them? The subject is vast and touches on the idea of liberty. Indeed, this mass of photos poses the question about its analysis and about its exploitation in this “wonderful” set that is Big Data. Each automated image contributes to a system that is little talked about and that no one refutes. And, as a magazine about  images , it is our duty to open the debate.

In this edition, you will also find a report about phototherapy, an investigation into photography in China; a portrait of Eileen Gittins, the founder of Blurb; and of course, portfolios such as that of Géraldine Millo about young people in training, or even that of Estelle Hanania who portrays the fantastic characters warding off winter’s evil spirits. And also the viewpoint of David Burnett on sport, and lots more…
