It is extremely difficult for an artist to talk about their work. My mentor Artist Will Barnet always reminded me to follow my heart. You may be familiar with a portrait I made of him, which now hangs in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art. Will Barnet was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2011, and in 2012 the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. After working together, we became friends and developed a special relationship. He encouraged me to continue my series on Sensuality – a recurring theme in my work and to see where it took me.
A few years ago, I became interested in making photos on Sensuality. These photographs were usually made at the end of the day after working on some other project or assignment.
For me and usually the person I am working with, it is a fun way to wrap things up and often times this collaboration, between us adds some sort of element or magic to the photographs that I make. I just love it! – JoAnne Kalish
