Paris Photo 2021 : La Galerie Rouge, Paris : Martine Barrat | Jean-Michel Fauquet

Preview

The Galerie Rouge presents two distinct photographic universes. Martine Barrat is a documentary photographer. Since 1968, she has been walking the streets of Harlem and the South Bronx of New York, and those of the Goutte D’Or district in Paris in the 1980s. Her photographs, both political and intimate, reflect the links that she has woven with her subjects and the strength of her commitment to the communities she meets. Jean-Michel Fauquet, fine art photographer, combines painting, drawing and sculpture. This approach differs from that of Martine Barrat both by its subject, which is an invented world, and by its artistic treatment. By using various processes and by constructing objects in the studio, he questions our relationship to photography and reality. However, intimacy is at the heart of these two works: for Barrat, photography is a means of forging relationships with his subjects and for Fauquet, it allows him to explore his own interiority.
