Paris : Julie Poncet at Little Big Galerie

Preview

For its latest exhibition, Little Big Galerie is hosting young photographer Julie Poncet, who will be presenting two of her self-portrait series. The first is entitled “Like a Fish…” and is a series of self-portraits produced in abandoned buildings in an “urbex” (or urban exploration) style.

Its full title is actually “Like a (gold)fish… in a bowl” and the images depict a character who looks more like an ornament left behind in the building. Like a goldfish, ill at ease in its bowl, she is withdrawn, blocking out the world around her, refusing the decrepitude of the surroundings. Yet she remains there, a little red mark in the middle of the decor, an inanimate decorative feature.

The second series on show is called “Wallflower” and is inspired by the work of Liu Bolin and Cecilia Paredes who have both experimented with the idea of camouflage and body painting. Here the idea is to recreate a 3D decor, completely covering it in fabric. The sense of depth and distance between the character and her environment narrows as the oppression increases. The series can be viewed as a set of diptychs, with first a front view then a view from above, revealing what might initially have been concealed.
