The Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography is presenting to the Russian public, for the first time, the work of the young Swedish photographer Erik Johansson, known for his staged surreal landscapes. Each of his works consists of fragments of many images, carefully processed and cleverly combined in a graphics editor. Johansson boldly invades images with manipulation, constructing fantasy scenes and expanding the boundaries of human perception. From an early age,…

Last year, the Rencontres d’Arles held its breath… but for a memorable football game: a legendary Germany-France, played not far from here, in Marseille. Extremely rare during the festival’s opening week: the whole town had completely forgotten photography for an evening.
This year, the Rencontres are changing the Discovery Award by involving galleries. Among the close to 200 candidatures, ten projects were selected to be exhibited. Over the opening week, professionals will vote to grant the New Discovery Award, which rewards the artist and her gallery with 20,000 euros.
Between 1974 and 1994, when the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles were in their adolescence, Pierre-Jean Amar mixed with and photographed the greatest photographers in the world. Discussions, workshops, evenings at the Théâtre Antique, receptions, openings… the world of photography (small then) met, discussed, fell in love, made-up, innovated…
Timothy Prus is the curator of the Archive of Modern Conflict, and an atypical collector. He is the person whom we owe for putting together the controversial “Nein, Onkel!” archive, that depicts playful Nazi soldiers relaxing aside from the horrendous war.
Do not miss this exhibition under any circumstances! It is a wonder. It is the only gallery, place Paul Doumer at the beginning of the Rue de la Roquette in Arles. We discovered it on Saturday, thanks Julian Meijer. The author of the images, Vincent Flouret, is one of the most fascinating and funny: in short it was the ultimate moment of happiness of this wonderful week!
The focal point of this exhibition at MAPFRE Foundation is the portrait of the 20th century, in which different artists from all around the world and historical moments approach the human figure in a variety of ways. Included are photographers such as Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Harry Callahan, Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, Alberto García-Alix, Emmet Gowin or Graciela Iturbide.
