NILS-UDO

Preview

Born in Bavaria in 1937, NILS-UDO is an essential artist of the European counterpart of the “land art” movement. Painter then photographer of his installations, he is at the origin of the current “Art in Nature”.

His recomposed images are today a reference in the field of contemporary photography. In his Installations  sponsored around the world, NILS-UDO interact with the landscape never forcing it. From Connemara to the Island of the Reunion, from Vassivière Island to Central Park, this indefatigable surveyor of the globe designs each intervention separately, guided by the “genius of the place” and the materials collected on site. The work can then begin under his watchful eye to mold nature to his vision. His compositions on troubling scales, sometimes oversized sometimes Lilliputian, stubbornly seek the perfect balance, this moment of infinite grace just before it is scattered. Once the installation is complete, the photograph freezes it for eternity and becomes the work in its own right.

The Center of Contemporary Art of the Matmut presents paintings and photographs emblematic or unpublished by the artist. This exhibition is a dialogue with his monumental installation Vallée, in the park of the Centre d’Art Contemporain, which is part of the 3rd edition of “Jumièges à Ciel Ouvert” organized by the Department of Seine-Maritime at Jumièges Abbey (27 April – 31 October 2019).
