In the French collective unconscious the word ‘datcha’ immediately and irreparably evokes Anton Tchekhov’s plays, Ivan Tourguenev’s novels, and, of course, the great novels of Leo Tolstoy. These works have made the dacha famous, the scenes of ‘La Cerisaie’ have become classic … Appeared in the 18th century, the dacha was a summer house, simply furnished, belonging to the nobility and the bourgeoisie. Until a century later, the ‘datcha’ mania broke out and became an object of worship.
