Preview

Franck Olivas returns to the MUSEAAV on Place Garibaldi in Nice, two years after his first appearance when he immersed the audience in total darkness for stunning photography sessions and dance. At the opening on 30th November 2012, guests will discover a new performance ‘Trasparenza’ with interpretation by Aurore Riva, together with the sounds of Merakhaazan on bass and Raphael Zweifel cello.

Franck Olivas, lives and works in the Gulf of St Tropez in France. He’s a visual artist very attracted to new medias and photography. He has devoted himself since 2010 to the Art of performance. His aim is to make his models and his dancers move with random movements, improvised choreographies that he likes to call « Les Figures Libres Imposées » (freestyle imposed figures) and to capture images through the performance , most often in front of an audience. All the shooting and lighting techniques are used to obtain the effects he has thought of. The images collected from the performance are selected in order to suggest another vision, while diverting the present observers’ memories . All these dramatizations are imaginary universes, built over fantastical frames. Olivas shows are played in generally small spaces, in order to hide, and then reveal the bodies; he deprives them of a part their senses, he exacerbates the shapes and the movements. He gives them the opportunity to be forgotten and revealed thanks to the poetry of gestures, like the conductor of an orchestra who is at the same time leading and freeing his “accomplices” –as he says-, getting from each of them what they would not have expected to be able to express in order to perform to the best of their abilities. In 2011, part of his works was published as a limited edition multimedia portfolio, « performing forms », retracing a performances cycle made at Monaco. Its archives were delivered to the National Center of Contemporary Art of Nice (Villa Arson), which is carrying out a historical study and an inventory about the Art of Performance in the French Riviera and Provence.

“Olivas confronts us with the limits of our perception and opens us to the confusing world of apperception, the balance in the imbalance, the chaotic suspension, out of time, halfway between seeming and being. His public performances are snapshots, just like lighting Impacts, but felt as instants of poetry. Each step is a work: first, the performance brings together the action of shooting and the personality of his models or dancers, then the captured picture is transformed in an artistic image, reflecting his artist’s view of the scene. He wants to make us develop our Faculty of Observation, he teaches us how to perceive the duality between our senses impression and our mind comprehensibility: beauty is no longer an extrinsic finality, but the starting point of an intrinsic reality; it is his intimacy expressed in and by the light.”
