Les Coupes: Portrait of a family farm

Preview

The farm, named after the locality Les Coupes de Pouligny and operated by the Martin family, is located in the département of the Nièvre. The present book of photographs by Philippe Bazin documents the  work and daily life on this farm during the summer of 2015, showing how they straddle modernity and tradition, development and teaching. The volume is the result of a combined photographic, ethnological, and literary approach to a unique place.

Upon viewing Philippe Bazin’s photos, Muriel Martin, the eldest daughter in the family, wrote spontaneously . Her text, featured in the book, is part testimony part commitment, and reveals an undeniable sociological and literary dimension. It is the expression of a voice that comes straight from the field, speaking for those who normally remain silent. The writer Marie-Hélène Lafon has also spent some time at the farm and, in her preface, invites us to “enter” into the intimacy of the farmstead. The book creates a sensory connection between images and words, and demonstrates ethical rigour.
