The bookstore and small gallery “John Doe Books” in Coustellet, in the Luberon, offered an exhibition of photographs by Lluis Ripoll throughout the month of July. His first exhibition in France. Thirty silver prints were presented, which covered a period of thirty years devoted to street photography.

Lluis Ripoll, born in 1943, is hardly interested in the luxury of the city and its wealthy men and women but rather lingers,  with sympathy, in the popular streets. Photographer of humanist tradition, he captures the incessant movement, night and day, of the city and its ordinary figures. Intrepid children, lovers entwined, nostalgic old people…  he shows unusual places, ignored by tourists in the metropolises (especially Barcelona), temporary architecture, bars, balls… The shadows of day and the lights of night…

His discretion (we say he is invisible) and his patience allow him to grasp the intimate as closely as possible. In compositions that force the gaze. Lluis Ripoll offers us his vision of urban reality, in contrasting forms and through emotions.

“Images are like love, they are the only things that we have left and that will be transmitted beyond our existence. An image represents a need for communication, sometimes for complicity. An image is a look, love of one’s own, friends, beauty, and life. This is the fundamental reason to photograph. To capture life and emotions, and sharing it by passing it on to others, showing them how we lived, how we felt.” Lluis Ripoll
