Françoise Chadaillac : The Queen of Potato or The Canteens of Detour

Preview

I went to Montreal to prepare a thesis, with pictures in support of urban spaces.

I came back with a photographic series about ” fried potatoes”. Divine surprises of life!

Today, Loco editions accompany me so that this work becomes a book, which mixes photographs and testimonies.

Photographing these “stands” made me discover a phenomenon of society, specific to Quebec, truly rooted in the lives of Quebecers. And as someone told me during these encounters: “There is not a Quebecker who does not have a potato stand in his heart! “. To each his stand and his best potato, his best poutine, his best hot dog or his best pogo!

But above all, I met there a small parcel of humanity magnificent, simple, lucid, full of humor, a small part of the whole of humanity. The words picked up during my shots changed my project and appeared to me as indispensable as the images. It was in the late 1970s.

For those who do not yet know Quebec, give yourself this little “detour”, a journey through its vast expanses. For others, give yourself a stroll back in time with these images and words that would not have been denied by the cohort of poets: Gaston Miron, Félix Leclerc, Gilles Vigneault, Robert Charlebois, Michel Tremblay and many others who have so well known how to make their country  be alive and loved by their French cousins.

Thanks to you, with this book of photos and texts, your lunch at the “food truck” around the corner will inevitably have the taste and smell of the “Belle Province”.
