Foto Femme United & la Galerie &CO119 : C*NSORSH*P

Preview

This exhibition has been canceled, postponed or can only be seen by appointment: we have decided to show it to you!

Galerie &CO119 collaborated with Foto Femme United (FFU) to launch their first ever open call photography competition and exhibition on the topic of censorship in the media. The competition had no entry fee and was open to all women identifying photographers worldwide.

SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE

FFU claims that censorship of art on social media is not only embarrassing: ruthless while being random, but that it hides a deeper dimension. April Wiser, founder of the FFU, says that “social media giants like Instagram and Facebook demonstrate, for example, through these acts of censorship, that the female form can and should only exist in a very limited space. Just because a woman is naked, it means she has to be sexualized. They even go so far as to censor feminist activism and make it difficult to spread a voice or platform. This exhibition was created with the aim of providing a space for photographers to show their censored or prohibited art, as well as to educate the public about the injustices present on social networks. ”

CHALLENGING THE STATISTICS

Worldwide statistics indicate that women still comprise less than half of the exhibited photographers in major museums, competitions and photography fairs such as Paris Photo or Arles Photo Festival. “We don’t have to submit to the photography industry. We can demonstrate that we women identifying photographers are just as qualified and deserving of exhibition opportunities. We can act and create our own competitions and host our own exhibitions in order to give each other a space to be seen.” states FFU founder April Wiser.

A JURY OF EMPOWERMENT

The exhibition was juried by Galerie &CO119 curator/art director Kinuko Esther Asano Fisheye Magazine journalist Lou Tsatsas, and Foto Femme United Founder April Wiser.
