L’ANGLE gallery presents the exhibition Shamans – Resonance in the Visible and the Invisible by Patrick James Michel.
Unlike the Western view, shamans on five continents do not separate the material from the spiritual, the visible from the invisible, the human from living nature. Currently, we are witnessing a shift in the perception of the shaman, a return to grace, due in part to the “New Age” trend and, above all, to an awareness of the primordial importance of nature and Mother Earth.
With his portraits, Patrick James Michel takes us on a journey through time and quantum physics. It is in the ancient spiritual tradition of shamanism that he specifically explores resonance as a phenomenon of dynamic interaction between the subject and the world.
The exhibition presented becomes a poetic space for sharing energy, combining photographs, texts, and videos. The photographs are taken with a 20x25cm view camera using the wet-plate collodion process on glass plates. The collodion plates are scanned and printed on archival paper, or are then platinum-printed, or printed using the artisanal grain gravure process on copper plates. Another part of the work is also produced with 4×5′ and 20x25cm view cameras, but on negative film plates, which are then printed on baryta paper.
The return to traditional photographic techniques draws on the sources of the magic of photography, alchemy, and dematerialization, and is in keeping with their subject: shamans, whose art dates back to the dawn of time and whose wisdom, despite everything, is more relevant than ever.
Patrick James Michel here raises the question of a reconfiguration of the relationships between women, men, and the universe in which we live by restoring a “harmonious resonance.”
