China, spring 1966. Little by little, madness took over the streets of Beijing. This was the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. At the beginning, joy, youthful fervor, freedom of movement, hope… followed by humiliations, persecutions, lynchings, executions… History in the making, ten dark years which claimed tens of millions victims.
Solange Brand – twenty years old – then secretary at the French embassy photographed what she saw while feeling the force of the events but without being aware that this fundamental movement would register as a major episode in history. And that her photos would constitute a valuable testimony: away from official propaganda, there are few color documents evoking this era.
The photos gathered here, close-ups and exchanged glances, offer us fragments of reality of these historical times.
