Elsa Leydier – Transatlántica

Preview

Elsa Leydier is our correspondent in Brazil. Until April 20, she exhibited in Paris her own photos. Here is his gallerist Yan Di Meglio presents:

Elsa Leydier, a living French artist in Rio de Janeiro, reprogram the political charge of images and invites to doubt their capacity to paint reality. In the exhibition Transatlántica, she presents three projects realized between 2016 and 2018, through which she proposes a rediscovery of dominant visual representations of iconic places of Latin America.

# elenão is a recent work, created during the presidential elections that crowned Jair Bolsonaro. Images gleaned from search engines representing a cheerful Brazil. Elsa Leydier changes them by inserting in their digital code racists and hate speeches given by the president during the campaign, producing bugs and interference in idealized representations. These are failing images – in power / of the power   are framed in a mini-light box in the shape of a mobile phone, recalling that Jair Bolsonaro was campaigning on social networks, refusing any debate with his opponents.

In Braços Verdes and Olhos Cheios de Asas, Elsa Leydier reveals the fantasy mechanism of the Amazon, iconic territory par excellence. The images are manipulated, sometimes diverted from a tourist support. Their materiality is obvious to reveal our fantasies about the Amazon rainforest, largely fueled by the images produced and broadcast on the region.

By the same process, the artist produces an inverse discourse with Platanus con platino, a work carried out in the Chocó in Colombia, an extremely poor region often portrayed in a pessimistic way by the media. Elsa Leydier produces “pop” images, bright and lustrous, bringing to its surface the glitz and richness of the biodiversity of Chocó, and thus showing the region from a point of view  our of sync from the usual speeches.
