Arles 2021 : Women In Motion 2021 Award for photography : Liz Johnson Artur

Preview

Kering and Les Rencontres d´Arles present the Women In Motion Award this Monday, July 5 to Liz Johnson Artur during the first evening at the Théâtre Antique d´Arles. She will present her work there and will share with the public her career and her perspective on the place of women in photography.

Since 1991, Liz Johnson Artur has assembled a body of images devoted to the African diaspora around the world, brought together under the name Black Balloon Archive. Her dynamic documentary photographs, in color or black and white, paint a complex picture of Black identities. She doesn’t work with a subject – she photographs human beings and uses her work to tell stories. “What interests me are people,” she says, “people that I have not seen represented anywhere.”

“Women have been part of the history of photography from the very beginning, and they have produced incredible works. The good thing about this award is that it shines the spotlight on works that have not always been recognized for their fair value and it alerts us to the fact that recognizing the work of female photographers shouldn’t take place just once a year.” Liz Johnson Artur

Liz Johnson Artur will be present in the Masculinities exhibition at the Rencontres d´Arles in 2021.
