Anna Pizzoccaro–Belice Valley

Preview

Submitted photo project presentation:
The Belice Valley is located in the central part of Sicily. In 1968 a violent earthquake destroyed several towns killing 200 people and leaving 100000 homeless. The Italian administration rebuilt the towns in new locations and left the old ones completely abandoned. When the population decided to migrate, deterioration even increased. During the following forty years, nature took over derelict buildings, creating a new landscape which is neither natural nor human, but something new and different. This is what Gilles Clément calls Le Tiers Paesage (third landscape): a leftover place that undergoes its natural evolution and reminds us that nature is enough powerful to outlive man.
