While women have long been excluded from learning and practicing arts for cultural reasons, the commitment to face the invisibility they suffer as creators and artists is no less relevant today.
While the 1970s saw the rise of women’s collective exhibitions, the women’s liberation movement was not accompanied, during those years, by an increasing presence in galleries or by an increasing number of individual exhibitions devoted to female artists.
In the 21st century, there is no doubt that parity is not yet achieved. After this long invisibility of women in art, the MBAL, like society, wants a better balance and promote the entry of women’s works in the museum.
The six artists we present here – Viviane Sassen, Sophie Bouvier Ausländer, SMITH, Laura Letinsky, Lili Erzinger and Sandrine Pelletier – question the world and its representations through a prism that integrates the question of gender.
