Michael Kenna, A Taste of Paradise

Preview

This beautiful book from publisher Nazraeli, Huangshan: The Yellow Mountain by photographer Michael Kenna, is the second on the theme of the Yellow Mountains situated in the Anhui province in Eastern China. Michael Kenna has gone on several trips, from 2007 to 2017, to these legendary mountains. Chinese painting has always celebrated landscape, and this photographer has also embraced the tradition.

Although the beauty of these mountains is known to thousands of tourists who survey its some sixty thousands steps, individuals are, nonetheless, still often touched by the grace of the site: seventy-two unique granite peaks, the ever-present pines that push straight towards the rocky walls, and clouds in perpetual motion that seem to slip from the heavens. “I walked for two days,” explains Michael Kenna. “The sun shined, then came the clouds, bringing along rain and reduced vision. Then, the clouds generously opened, revealing the most majestic view, the famous sea of clouds. They moved, sank, rolled, hid, and then let massive granite sculptures, rocky walls, trees, and valleys appear. A taste of Paradise. Magic granted, magic taken away. That’s how Huangshan is, unpredictable and uncontrollable, like life.”
