Slash-and-burn agriculture is practiced in many parts of the world, in pastures and forests. The cut timber dries for several months and is then burned. The ashes produced fertilize the soil that will be seeded at the beginning of the rainy season. Along the Mekong River, in northern Laos, farmers are setting fire to rice fields, forests and all arable land.
