Queer identity in Louisiana, by Ransom Ashley

Preview

Ransom Ashley is a photographer and actor from Louisiana that uses his camera lens to explore his identity and coming of age experience in the American Bible Belt. The young artist attended Parsons The New School for Design in New York where he was concentrating on photography and is now finishing his psychology degree at university in Louisiana. Ransom, becoming fascinated with storytelling through his involvement with his local community theatre programs during grade school, has explored his passion through his photographs, as a means to explore identity and his upbringing in the American Bible Belt.

In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Ransom Ashley recalled his experience growing up as someone who deviated from the status quo in his small southern town. He said: “It was a very confusing time for me and in some ways I feel I am still figuring it out. My photography is very much the medium through which I explored and continue to explore my emotions and probe deeper into my sense of self. Ransom can currently be found documenting the vibrant subcultures of Northwest Louisiana and is also finishing a collaboration with Italian artist and fashion designer Nicola Romagnoli, who was a finalist for the Kering award and was profiled in Vogue for his achievements as a young fashion designer.
