PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai 2017: Insights, A Color Explosion

Preview

The Insights exhibition, is an initiative which focuses on an important moment in the development of fine art photography practices. Presented at Photofairs Shanghai’s 2017 edition last weekend, Insights: A Color Explosion: The Rise of Contemporary Photography, traces color photography from the mid-1970s to the present day. Beginning with the experimental dye-transfer prints of William Eggleston, photographic masters Daido Moriyama, Harry Callahan, Richard Misrach and Luigi Ghirri are shown in the exhibition alongside a generation of younger collectable European, Asian and American artists. These artists include Wu Ding, Jiang Pengyi, Andrea Good, Vik Muniz, Shen Wei, Robert Zhao and Geng Jianyi. Insights curator and Photofairs’ Artistic Director Alexander Montague-Sparey explained why the history of color was chosen as the 2017 focus: “As the fair is very much dedicated to contemporary work, it seemed important to hark back to the beginnings of colour photography and to shed light on the work of William Eggleston, for example,  as a starting off point for inspiration. To trace the history of colour photography is important at a time when contemporary practitioners and collectors of photography might take colour photography for granted. To understand the works of a master such as Eggleston is to allow audiences to better understand the trajectory of photography as a practice.”
