The process of creating this book has deepened my respect for my colleagues who are dealing with the full spectrum of human behavior … every therapist I encountered impressed me with his or her commitment to alleviating symptoms and improving the lives of their patients. This book is my tribute to their work …” – Sebastian Zimmermann

In Fifty Shrinks, psychiatrist and photographer Sebastian Zimmermann presents a photographic survey of the current field of psychiatry and psychology through penetrating portraits of fifty therapists all taken in the most sacred of places – the private office where they see their patients. Ranging from luminaries to newly minted analysts, Zimmermann’s subjects hail from widely different orientations that collectively reveal the diversity of approaches to therapeutic practice today.

In over twelve years, Zimmermann gained extraordinary access to many well-known practitioners. His intimate portraits draw the viewer into each picture, offering tantalizing clues to their interests showing their offices that range from elegant to cozy to sparse. The photographs are illuminated with excerpts from Zimmermann’s candid conversations with his colleagues, and together the photographs and texts create a moving document, testifying to each therapist’s wisdom and empathy for their patients. Zimmermann’s photographs capture the feeling of the rooms in which a powerful process occurs; and through the interviews we begin to understand why the room looks the way it does. It is a glimpse into both the private spaces we rarely see and the minds of the healers who work there.
