This exhibition, called Rétrospective, showcases American photograph Melvin Sokolsky, a major figure in the revival of fashion photography in the 1960s. Considered the golden age of photography, this was a period of major innovations and audacious images, a decade that formulated a new vocabulary that still inspires image-makers to this day.
Born in New York, Sokolsky was just 21 years old when he started to work in fashion for Harper’s Bazaar in 1959.
After working more than a decade as a brilliantly creative fashion photographer, Sokolsky became interested in film and in 1975 decided to move to Los Angeles where he launched a career as a director, primarily in advertising.
In the early 2000s, he returned to photography and pursued numerous projects with many magazines abroad.
For his exhibition at Art District, Sokolsky is showing photographs from his Bubbles and Flying series, produced in 1963 and 1965, respectively; they are now considered to be classics of fashion photography.
