In the Intimacy of a Myth: 50 Photographs by Guy Marineau

Preview

Valentino smokes a cigarette at Maxime’s, Yves Saint Laurent poses in a designer armchair in his rue de Babylone garden, Gianni Versace take pride of place as the patriarch at the family table in Milan. These kinds of images mark a mythic time period: that of the late 1970s and early 1980s. A time, and especially its emblematic figures, captured by photographer Guy Marineau. Guy Marineau was one of the society photographers. The beginning of his career is a nice story. In 1971, he left Béarn for Paris. Getting off the train at seven in the morning, his first interview, concerning a job at the Préfecture’s mug shot department, went well. The second, with the Réalité press group, went even better. He made black and white prints in their laboratory and was hired on the spot. Today, he is a little forgotten. It is thanks to Say Who Gallery in Paris that we can rediscover his images. Say Who Gallery is also the first digital gallery dedicated to societal and relational photography. Their next rediscovery will be Philippe Morillon, another photography legend.
