Danny Williams, Stories From The Mail Room

Preview
A day in the life of a mail room worker. This project is a comment on acceptance. It illustrates the unending optimism of one man in a surreal version of a run-of-the-mill job. The impossibility of his work (given the unlikely post he receives to handle in the mail room) is counterbalanced by his commentary. His work is therefore normalised by his outlook.

1 Lunch “I’ve been working in the mail room since ’68. It’s interesting work. I’m lucky to have this job. Today for example, I forgot my lunch, but it didn’t matter as my wife posted it in time.”

2 Decoration “I’m pleased the decoration has arrived, one of the first things I opened today, we took a while choosing it before we ordered. The office always has a good Christmas party.”

3 Stationery “Another order of stationary has arrived. It’s a busy place, so we always run out of things quickly. I’ll need to order another envelope now this one has been used.”

4 Payment “I hope I don’t get the blame for this, I can’t think how it could have gone missing. It’s not the first time, once there was a credit card that was taken, but I put it back later.”

5 Mystery “I’ve no idea what this is, someone who has been here longer than me will probably work it out. With the more difficult parcels, I leave them to senior staff.”

6 Help “I’m glad these have arrived, I need these to open the rest of the packages. I wish I had opened it first. It’s one of the things I like about working here though; the surprise.”

7 Treat “After lunch, my colleagues and I sometimes have a treat. Usually something sweet and cold, but it depends on the weather and how busy we are.”

8 Fan Mail “We get our fair share of fan mail here, after all, it’s a pretty glamorous job. Sometimes they are sent anonymously, so we just share them out in turn.”

9 Afternoon “Around four, we have tea, sometimes coffee, depending on what turns up in the post. We don’t take a break for too long even though the sugar cubes take a long while to unwrap.”

10 Final “The last post of the day is always a bit of a sad moment. Sometimes I feel I could just go on working in to the night. Not only because I could use the overtime, but because parcels are like people; you just never know what’s inside.”
