The hectic streets of Manhattan by Tomaso Baldessarini

Preview

28mm Edition I Manhattan, by German photographer Tomaso Baldessarini is an intoxicating, emotional and at the same time documentary roller coaster ride. One single camera, a 28mm lens and the proximity of the photographer to the objects of the photographs allow the observer to submerge into a special world. The series is a piece of authentic contemporary life – “A slice of life of the present” as he says.

It is the first of a series that focuses on the individual districts of New York. The book series begins with Manhattan, the American synonym for wealth and success. On closer look, a battle for sheer existence for the citizens who do not know how to eke out their daily life opens up to the observer. Everyone is occupied with themselves and their own lives. The predominant exhaustion, rage and fear nevertheless let emerge an unshakeable will to survive.

On his photographical journey, Tomaso Baldessarini had to face his own fears: he was confronted with unfamiliarity and fear of contact. As a result, a visual self-portrait was created, since in every single photograph, his inner state is recognizable. It is the power of the moment with all its protagonists and fates that drives Baldessarini during his work. Through imagery that is rich in contrast and intensive in color, the photographer documents a modern society that is breaking over its own standards.
