The intimate diary of Stanley Greene, in letters and polaroids

Preview

The Tbilisi Photo Festival, in Georgia, presents late Stanley Greene’s intimate diary, the subject of a fascinating exhibition entitled See You In My Dreams!. It is based on the private collection of correspondences and images of the American photographer with his long-term friend Anna Shpakova. She was 25 and he was 50. It contains thirty Polaroids and thirty letters, created in Paris and Moscow in April – September 2001. This private diary, gives the form of the exhibition , intent to recollect the memories and represent an effort to accept the passing of a dear friend. “I thought of this exhibition at the very moment of recognition of loss and grief, with the need to share something special, sealed to all,” says Anna Shpakova. “Something sacramental you cannot hold to yourself and not share. Stanley was for the most a legendary photographer, whose wars and social injustice coverage will ever stay in the history of photography… For me he was a master of the eminent world, and I am grateful to have been part of his world. Not only a passionate truth searcher, true romantic and a poet, a passionate writer and a lover, he showed me the beauty beyond thought… These countless letters and polaroids became the evidence of a romance at a time where we were oblivious of the world falling. A series of thirty letters and Polaroids, appeared in spring and summer of 2001, accompanying a romance, and now became a narration. They allow us to penetrate, without being the voyeurs, the intimate, singular rhythm of Stanley Greene.
