Turkish Photographer Çağdaş Erdoğan Arrested in Istanbul

Turkish photographer Çağdaş Erdoğan was reportedly arrested in Istanbul. The announcement was made by his agency, 104journos, on Thursday, September 14th. Çağdaş Erdoğan was arrested for the first time last September 02 while taking photographs in the Kadikoy district. On 13 September, the Turkish police came to arrest him again and put him in pre-trial detention.

The photographer is accused of belonging to a terrorist organization, after photographing the building of the Turkish secret services, the MIT. Other photographs would also be held against him.

Nearly 260 journalists have been arrested this year by the Turkish authorities, as the Freedom Center in Stockholm recalls. 25 of them were tried and placed in detention. 135 Turkish journalists are under arrest warrants. This extremely aggressive policy vis-à-vis the media and freedom of opinion and information follows the failed coup d'état and the steps taken by Turkish President Recep Tayyit Erdoğan.
