PHotoESPAÑA: Anders Petersen, Café Lehmitz

Preview

An opportunity to enjoy seeing the previously unseen material from the key work of the Swedish photographer who portrayed the regular customers of the Café Lehmitz. Dozens of previously unseen and discarded images that gives one a deeper look into his working process.

In 1967, Anders Petersen discovered a bar called Café Lehmitz, which would become the subject of his first signature book. A meeting place for singular characters who little by little forged a name next to his own. Prostitutes, pimps, transvestite performers, the destitute and the usual customers form a magnificent and sincere picture in which Petersen, far from seeking compassion or repulsion, builds a portrait that recreates the human warmth and the camaraderie that was in the air in that Hamburg café between 1968 and 1970.

Petersen has allowed access to the full extent of his Café Lehmitz archive: the negatives, the tales, the relationships. Thus we enter the magnitude of his adventure, the remarkable experience of a photographer coming into contact with an extraordinary world. This exhibition affords us the opportunity to live first-hand a night at the Café Lehmitz, in the company of his friends, confronted with the situations and emotions they faced, thus enhancing our understanding of the book he published in 1977, which has since earned iconic status.
