Retrospective of Jean-Marie Périer in Marseille

Preview

France breathes again! Summer is here and a flowering of photographic festivals and exhibitions is blossoming, particularly in the south-east of France: here are some examples, beginning in Marseille with this exhibition by Jean-Marie Périer titled Des années 60 à nos jours(From the 60’s till today).

The exhibition is composed of one hundred and sixty photos from 1960 to 1970 and also thirty unseen prints where the photographer has set unknown Provencal people holding photos of personalities from the Département, in symbolic locations of the Bouches-du-Rhône. It is a new exhibition for Provence that revives the spirit of freedom and the carefree life from the time of “Salut les copains”. “The Bouches-du-Rhône Library’s commission consisted of photographing the region’s celebrities”, explained Jean-Marie Périer. “After Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, I thought that I could hardly do as well. So I proposed putting the prints of these portraits into the hands of “normal” people and this, in the region’s landscapes, seemed to me more spectacular.”
