Photo London 2015 :

Preview

For this first edition of Photo London, L’Oeil de la Photographie contacted each of the galleries to ask them about their participation to this new London Fair dedicated to photography. The galleries also wished to share with us an emblematic picture presented in their booth  during Photo London. Focus on the Londonian and British galleries.

• A.I. – London, UK
“A.I. (booth D5) is participating in this new fair by Candlestar because of its ability to widen audiences to photographic based works and its renowned high-level programming supporting emerging artists. Being in London is important as it is a key city for art collectors.”
Anne-Marie Tong
Based in London, A.I. is a platform exhibiting emerging artists to an international audience; it is committed to encouraging an East-West dialogue. A.I. runs a series of pop-up exhibitions as well as an online space. At PhotoLondon (booth D5), we will be presenting a two-person exhibition: Sarah Choo Jing & Fiona Struengmann with a short text by a guest curator. Do refer to our website for more images if required. We would love to arrange for an artist interview, if it is of interest.

• Atlas Gallery – London, UK
“Now is the right time for a world-class fair devoted to photography in London. It has the potential to become the most important international event of its kind, and we are delighted to be participating with some fantastic collections, such as  Ernst Haas ‘Speakers Corner’ images from 1949, which have as yet been unseen in the UK, as well as the full and unique archive of prints from The Family,  Jocelyn Bain Hogg’s fascinating sociological documentary Photobook which offers unprecedented access to the Pyle family, one of London’s most Infamous crime families. We will also be bringing some stand alone iconic pieces, such as this infamous shot by Lewis Morley of Christine Keeler, taken in 1963”.

• Ayyam – London, UK
“Ayyam Gallery’s participation in the first edition of Photo London is part of our larger efforts to bring the Middle East’s leading innovators in photography to a wide spectrum of international audiences. Recently, Ayyam Gallery participated in the inaugural art fair of Photo Shanghai, where the reception to diverse photographers from the region was overwhelmingly positive among viewers and collectors alike. Similarly, as a co-sponsor of the FotoFest 2014 Biennial in Houston, Texas, Ayyam Gallery sought to expose American viewers to the exciting ways in which the field of photography is crossing disciplinary lines and formal boundaries in the works of artists who are reinventing the medium through conceptual approaches. Photo London’s outstanding lineup of exhibitors and its scheduled programme of events will provide a crucial platform for these developments to be examined in depth.”

• Flowers Gallery – London, UK
“Photography has played an integral part of the programme at the London-based Flowers Gallery since its inception in 1970. Now representing over ten established photographers, the programme also includes a number of exhibitions by invited artists and curators across a range of contemporary photographic practices. Photo London is an opportunity for Flowers to showcase the breadth of its programme and how it has grown over the past decade. London has witnessed a surge in interest towards photography over this time, but one thing has been missing – a major event to bring all the photography specialist galleries together.”

• Gazelli Art House – London, UK
“In Photo London, we will be displaying works by : Alinka Echeverria, Aaron Koblin & Ben Tricklebank, Charlotte Colbert, Walter & Zoniel and Francesco Jodice.
This will be the first time we show Francesco Jodice’s iconic body of work in London, we are excited to do so and see how it is received . Walter & Zoniel would have just finished their salt print workshop at Tate Modern where they will be creating one of the pieces on display at our booth and Alinka Echeverria will be referencing her solo photographic exhibition at the gallery in London (which coincides with Photolondon) as well as her participation at the Havana Biennial which has just been confirmed. The program of the gallery has evolved to include a strong group of international photographers each with a very unique style and focus. We chose to participate at the fair as it serves as an interesting  platform to highlight this side of the gallery’s program.”

• Grimaldi Gavin – London, UK
“The absence of a photography-led art fair in London has been evident for some time and so we have been wholly supportive of Photo London from the outset. Alongside the art fair, the programme of exhibitions, innovative talks and satellite events will reflect the vitality of the UK’s photography industry, in all its guises. We are confident that Photo London will showcase this whilst introducing new audiences and collectors to photography.”

• Pi Artworks – London, UK
“Maria Friberg recently had a very successful solo exhibition, Communicate over Vast Distances, at Pi Artworks London and the aim is for Photo London to build on this success and improve the awareness of Maria’s practice amongst a UK audience. As a fair that deals specifically in photography we feel this is well suited to her practice and would be a good platform. It will also be our first major Art Fair in the UK. We were really drawn to Photo London due to the beauty of the venue of Somerset House and we are confident it will get a considerable audience. Maria has exhibited extensively throughout her native Scandinavia including at major public institutions, she also has gallery representation and collectors through Europe and the US, but she is not widely known in the UK. We hope the combination of her solo booth at Photo London and her recent show at the gallery will change this.”

“We work with a select group of photographers who, although working very differently, all straddle time, with one foot in the 19th century – tied to the experiments and techniques of the moment when the medium was first born – and one in the present day making work that is unmistakably contemporary. There is a place for a significant photography fair in London, providing an international platform for artists working across the breadth of the medium, and we are very pleased to be participating in this inaugural fair.”
