Photo London 2015 :

Preview

For this first edition of Photo London, L’Oeil de la Photographie contacted each of the galleries to ask them about their participation to this new London Fair dedicated to photography. The galleries also wished to share with us an emblematic picture presented on their stand  during Photo London. Focus on European galleries.

• Kahmann Gallery – Amsterdam, The Netherlands
“We chose to do Photo London as we see London as the centre of the art world and the art market, and as the standards have already been set very high for this first edition, we felt very confident that Photo London is going to be the art event of the year.”

• IBASHO – Antwerp, Belgium
“Given its pre-eminent role in the development of photography, its strong public interest and its large collector base, the UK deserves a photography fair of international standing. For us, as a new photography gallery and former Londoners, it is a great honour to participate in the inaugural edition of the fair that has been missing from the vibrant art scene in London. Photo London is a great platform to introduce our collection of Japanese photography to the British and international public. We hope our selection of contemporary photography by Takashi Yasumura and Yoshinori Mizutani, and works by master photographers Shomei Tomatsu, Daido Moriyama, Issei Suda, Miyako Ischiuchi, Keizo Kitajima and Toshiko Okanoue will appeal and impress.”

• Camera work – Berlin, Germany
“The history of photography has always been closely connected to the city of London. Moreover, London’s open-minded and professional affinity to photographic art has been shaping the art market sustainably for a broad spectrum of photography. Therefore, while it is our philosophy to focus on both classic and contemporary photographic art, the city of London and Photo London stand out as a perfect playing field for CAMERA WORK. And as writing history is desirable, CAMERA WORK is pleased and proud to participate in this new fair in order to join one of the most relevant art fairs dedicated to photography at a unique fair building from the very beginning.”

“Galerie Pavlova was founded in Berlin to present the work of contemporary photographic artists from Australia & New Zealand to a new audience in Europe. We have chosen to participate in the inaugural Photo London art fair, as we feel the long tradition of photography within the UK and strong established interest in the medium, will allow us to raise awareness of the work of our artists and contemporary photography programme to the attention of the greater European photographic community.”

• Robert Morat Galerie – Berlin, Germany
“There are three main reasons for our participation in Photo London. First of all, I believe that London is a great market place and that it has finally discovered photography, I think it is ready for a photography fair. Then: As a photography gallery, we have always had the best experiences at fairs that focus on the medium and for a long time, we have waited for a spring fair that could be a counterpart to the fall events, UNSEEN In Amsterdam in September and of course Paris Photo in November. And last but not least: It’s a people business and the people behind Photo London have inspired my imagination from the first moment when we started talking about the project last year. I really wanted to be a part of this!”

• PUG – Oslo, Norway
“A photography fair in the heart of London. The fair gathers international and high quality art in the beautiful setting of Somerset House, and together with their professional team, the fair reaches out to a diverse audience of art-lovers, collectors, institutions. Through the lectures, the galleries and the setting, the audience is exposed to a globale art atmosphere.
Photo London gives focus to Photography as an art medium, in all its complexities, and directions. The galleries and the audience need dedicated atmospheres to indulge, see, learn, show and purchase good work.
An important fair and atmosphere to show incredible work, which PUG OSLO are proud to be a part of.”

“This new fair allows us  to meet our collectors based in London,  especially French collectors working in the City and also meet the institutions. It will also be the opportunity to show photos of Derry realized by Gilles Caron in 1969, , a great first  which should stand out. It’s always very exciting to take part to the first edition of a new photo fair and the 4 artists presented on our booth will be here throughout the duration of the fair, Nicolas Dhervillers, Sacha Goldberger, the Bachelot Caron, Gilles Caron being represented by his daughter Marjolaine and the Director of the Foundation.”

• Galerie Vanessa Quang – Paris, France
For 15 years, Vanessa Quang Gallery has taken the chance to go with emerging talents to inaugural art fairs. Photo London will be its first booth designed by Canadian artist Martin Lord to serve a group show with unseen recent artworks of Finnish, Danish and French artists. Emeric Lhuisset for instance will present a very new photograph of its serie “Theater of War”. Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen is presenting photographs of his latest Italian project on migrants: the prints were produced to be first seen in Photo London.
“It’s a major challenge to see if the market is ready for another international photography fair: Eyes are on London and I think the team worked up a very exciting program.

• Polka Galerie – Paris, France
“We really wanted to participate in Photo London because London is such an important city. After Paris, New York and even Los Angeles, it was essential that the capital of the UK have its own photo fair. Our English collectors, and many of our French and Belgian collectors, are very happy, and curious, to discover this new event in the singular Somerset House.  For this first edition, we decided to mix several generations of artists and to only exhibit pieces which have never been exhibited in London. The theme of the stand is “alienation,” a theatrical principle developed by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht. The five exhibited photographers are Alexander Gronsky, the duo Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre, Sebastião Salgado and Toshio Shibata, all of whom are exploring documentary by creating a “distancing” effect that disrupts the viewer’s passive and linear perception.”

• Ernst Hilger Galerie – Vienna, Austria
As a gallery representing contemporary photoghraphers we feel that this is a great platform to present our artists such as Anastasia Khoroshilova (collateral project 2011 Biennale di Venezia) and well known Italian artist Massimo Vitali. Some of our contemporary artists have established themselves as forces to be reckoned with for example NYC based Brian McKee and Mona Kuhn (born in Brazil, of German descent, lives and works in Los Angeles).”
