What happens when a photographer and former art director brings pop culture and superhoes into Flemish painting and  Elizabethan-era fashion?

Exhibited for the first time at the School Gallery and Paris Photo this November, Sacha Goldberger’s new series displays an astonishing originality and aesthetic quality. After his popular series with Mamika, a grandmother with superpowers, Goldberger is now continuing his exploration of the character of the superhero, placing all his talent and professionalism in the service of his inner child, to our delight.

What if Superman had been born in the 16th century? What if the Hulk had been a duke? And what if Van Eyck had painted a portrait of Snow White?

From Goldberger’s fascination with these characters, which goes back to his childhood, a desire was born to reappropriate them, to bring them back to the fold of art history, to repatriate them from distant America into the heart of Old Europe. With light, he reveals their nobility and fragility. And where there’s light, there’s shadows.
