« There’s no smoke without fire », a Swede like Anton Renborg would say when landing for the first time in Corsican creeks under a blazing sun. A guttural language where words sound like crumbling rocks and a liking for coves and crevices rather than beaches: here is what brings back   Viking reminiscence

Every summer, Anton Renborg comes back and digs deeper into the stone. He deciphers the smuggled smiles and peers into the steppe and its retreats. His western is an ellipse: neither the hero nor the enemy are to be seen and every single game or celebration seems on the verge of vanishing. Though with persistence and endless investigations through the wraiths of Mérimée’s characters/Merimean ghosts, the grain of the volcanic rock contacts the grain of his photographs and nurtures it with a coarseness reminding of American cinema in the Seventies and a sense of rebellion: like the desert of the Tartars, Renborg’s desert has personality but remains impenetrable.

Corsica, the land of postcards, becomes uncertain. The radiance of golden bronze glimmers reflects in Renborg’s blacks and whites like traces from the past gathered from the side of the roads. At the end of the collection, the point of view draws away and disappears for a better understanding of the title: Notices de la Corse is a demiurge’s guide to contemplate the island like an architect would gaze upon his amphitheatre or a lion tamer his arena.
