Linda Troeller: –Selfportraits

Preview

In this group exhibition, the gallery Ververs d’Amsterdam has included the latest work of the photographer Linda Troeller. A project of “self-representation” spanning more than 40 years, with self-portraits and portraits taken for other reasons throughout her life. Using this approach, Troeller documents the development of identity through time, the images showing a physical evolution, making reference to the technology of the times, including photography. They conjure up themes like women’s liberation, the joys and conflicts of sexuality, marriage and bohemian life. In this role-playing game, the vision of the photographer takes us to the beginnings of her ideas of emancipation. “The 1970’s were a period of unrest, women’s liberation, women’s groups, burning bras—finding a new place for ourselves,” says Troeller. “We wanted to expunge some of the rules of marriage, of the art world pecking order, of class. We started asking how much more can we own of our own bodies?”
