Tony Vaccaro –1944-1945

Preview

A member of the 83rd infantry division, Tony Vaccaro landed in Normandy in June, 1944. His regiment entered Brittany and received the order to take Dol-de-Bretagne, Cancale, Saint-Malo, then Dinard. His expedition also took him to Saint Briac sur mer, near Nantes, then east of Europe to Berlin.

Throughout this terrible odyssey, photographer Tony Vaccaro took pictures, immortalizing these moments in History. From the beaches of Normandy to the ruins of Berlin, his pictures are also exceptional documents attesting to the brutality of war. They provide an unprecedented view of the daily lives of soldiers, their down time, their welcomings by the local populations, and their travels through Europe.

On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Archival Department of the Ille et Vilaine will be exhibiting 129 pictures taken by Tony Vaccaro and donated to the region in 1995.
