Born in the Syrian capital of Damascus in 1980, Tammam Azzam graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus with a focus on oil painting; subsequently he obtained a fine arts certificate in 2001 from Darat al Funun, Amman, Jordan. Azzam experiments in the application of various media to create artwork as a “hybrid form,” one that is capable of borrowing and multiplying as it evolves. His recent works employ digital media and street art references to examine the ongoing political and social upheaval in Syria, and the cycles of violence and destruction tearing his country apart. He cleverly reconfigures iconic symbols into poignant reflections of the turmoil facing his countrymen and the indifference of the world to their plight. He has recently relocated to Dubai, U.A.E., with his wife and children.

Azzam is represented by Ayyam Gallery. His exhibitions with the gallery include I, The Syrian (2013), London and Beirut; Syria (2012), Al Quoz, Dubai; Dirty Laundry (2011), Dubai International Financial Centre; untitled shows in Beirut in 2013 and 2010; and Metallica (2010), Damascus. His work also appeared in the 2009 group exhibition Stories From the Levant, Ayyam Gallery, Al Quoz, Dubai, and at the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, Slovenia.
